HOLD NOTHING BACK
Read Mark 14: 3-9
A woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly
ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar
and poured the ointment on [Jesus’] head.
My son Stephen gave me a big bottle of my favorite
cologne. I treasure this gift, and as the months go by, I use
just a little of it because I want it to last as long as possible.
But the woman in our reading for today wasn’t concerned
about conserving her costly perfume. She broke open the jar
so that nothing could stop the ointment’s flow to Jesus.
We often say that we will give our all for God, but usually
we give ourselves in a controlled way. We pour out a little
here and a little there, thinking that many will see our good
works and give glory to God. (See Matt. 5: 16.) But God wants
all our attention, our focus, our gifts, our talents, and our
thoughts — all of us.
I remember the woman in today’s reading not because of
the cost of her gift or because of her humility, both of which
are worthy of attention. I remember her because she shattered the jar and poured all
its contents on Jesus. She
held nothing back.
When we give ourselves
to God, we are offering a
priceless gift. Will we give
God only a little here and a little there, or will we break ourselves open and pour ourselves out to God?
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the precious gift of your son,
Jesus Christ. Help us to be open in giving ourselves to you.

Thought for the Day
Today I will look for ways to
pour myself out for God.
