THE PUZZLE PIECES OF LIFE
Read Ecclesiastes 3: 9-14
What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen
the burden God has laid on the human race. . . .
yet no one can fathom what God has done
from beginning to end.
When I take my son to the store to buy a new jigsaw
puzzle, he makes his choice based on the picture on the
outside of the box — the
potential beauty that it
can become. But when
we first open the box, the
puzzle looks nothing like
the picture on the outside;
it is simply jumbled pieces in a bag.
We all face the kinds of struggles that can leave us puzzled
by worry, anger, or sadness. We may feel broken, like the
puzzle pieces in the bag. But God can always see the bigger
picture — the picture on the outside of the box. As today’s
reading says, “[God] has made everything beautiful in its
Although the burdens of life will arise, God takes the
broken pieces of our pain, sadness, worry, and grief and
works in them to create something beautiful and whole. God
knows the potential we hold. When our hearts are heavy and
our strength is low, we can trust that with God, our puzzles
will be completed.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to trust that you are always at work
in our lives. Amen.
