THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever
follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.”
Both our home and the church where my wife and I serve
are located outside the city. This allows me the opportunity
to truly appreciate the wonders of nature day and night. I par-
ticularly enjoy the radiance of the full moon spilling its light
across the countryside.
The moon has no light
source of its own but reflects
the sun’s light. Yet while the
moon orbits Earth approximately every 27 days, its
gravitational forces are at work all the time affecting the tides,
among other things.
Today’s reading reminds us that Jesus Christ is the light
of the world, and we are to encourage others by sharing that
light in our lives. Like the moon, we do not own the light
but reflect the light supplied continuously by our own light
source, Jesus Christ. The light of Christ is for all people, and
when we reflect that light, we live in hope that all the world
will “have the light of life.”
Prayer: Creator God, thank you for the gift of your light of
love. Help us offer it generously to others. Amen.
